Samuel He and the Artemisia Duo

To purchase tickets click here! Samuel Shanbo was born in 1994 in Victoria BC, and began piano at age 6 and clarinet at age 11. He is the winner of the 2017 BC Provincial Festival for senior woodwinds, a prize winner with the Vancouver Women’s Musical Society, and has been awarded a number of honours and scholarships, most notably the prestigious BritishColumbia Graduate Scholarship. A full-time professional musician, Samuel is a member of the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy. As a diverse musician, Samuel has attended festivals such as Domaine Forget, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestral Institute, and the Beijing International Music FestivalAcademy, and has performed in masterclasses for such musicians as Yehuda Gilad, Keith Adam Lipson, and Carlos Ferreira. Samuel holds a master's degree from the University of British Columbia, and his primary teachers include Patricia Kostek, JoseFranch-Ballester, and Eric Abramovitz.

Formed in 2015, Artemisia Duo is an ensemble comprised of flutist Emily Richardson and pianist Susan Xia. The name Artemisia draws upon the root “Artemis”, the Greek goddess of wild animals and the moon. It also has a long history in the arts as the name of an accomplished female painter in the Baroque period. In addition, the word Artemisia combines segments of each of the members’ names with the word “art”, signifying their collaborative approach to creating music. Artemisia Duo has performed as part of the Roedde House Classical Series, UBC Tunes at noon and the Concerts in Care program. Emily and Susan are committed to increasing community engagement in the arts and performing outreach concerts in order to give back to the community. While they enjoy playing various genres and styles of music, they are especially passionate about making classical music accessible to all audiences. They also have a deep interest in exploring contemporary music and emerging pieces of the flute and piano canon, including working with local composers. Emily and Susan are both graduates of the UBC School of Music, where they worked with renowned musicians, including Christie Reside, Corey Hamm, and Terence Dawson. Emily has performed with numerous ensembles, including the 2018 National Youth Orchestra of Canada, and Susan has been featured as a soloist with the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra.
