Beginner's Pottery

The Beginner's Pottery class is a eight-week introduction to the world of handbuilding with clay taught by Ilse Phillips, an experienced ceramics artist and instructor. Clay is a very accessible and versatile medium, and the class is open to adults and youth aged 12+.

Time & Location

Apr 18, 2023, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Pender Island Community Hall, 4405 Bedwell Harbour Rd, Pender Island, BC V0N 2M1, Canada

About the event

You don't need a potter's wheel to make beautiful decorative and functional pieces. This class will help you learn about the various methods of handbuilding including pinch pottery, coil building, and slab building using household objects as molds. You'll explore texture and techniques, learn about the properties of clay, surface design, and decorating and painting with underglazes.

Participants will be building their pieces during the class and will need to take them home to dry. Ilse will be firing all the pieces in her home kiln. Because each class builds on the last, it's not recommended to miss any classes. Participants may be required to do some building or finishing of pieces between classes.

Registration opens Friday, February 10 at 9am and is limited to 12 spaces. If the class is full when you try and register, please email alice@ptarmiganarts.org to be added to a waitlist.
