About the event

HOSTED BY PTARMIGAN ARTS: https://www.ptarmiganarts.org/programs#!event/2022/10/15/honourable-harvest-and-weaving-workshop

Come explore what Honourable Harvest means to those of us who are non-Indigenous and harvesting basket materials. Practicing these teachings will help us to develop a healthy relationship with the plants, the land and the other beings around us. If time and weather permit, we will go out to harvest some materials for future use. All workshop materials are soft plants, locally harvested and are included in the fee. ($50 per person, includes prepared materials. Subsidies are available, please contact Ptarmigan Arts for more info.)

Basket weaving is found across all cultures and if you know or have examples of weaving from your ancestral background we encourage you to bring them to class. Karin and Teya will teach how to make a trivet, which is in fact the same as the bottom of a basket. From this project you will learn a couple of ways to start a basket, weaving techniques such as twining, adding spokes, and finishing the rim. These skills are directly transferable to making a full basket. Depending on how fast you weave you will go home with a finished project: either a  coaster, a trivet, or a shallow bowl.

Karin first learned to weave with wheat many years ago teaching classes through the Surrey Museum. In 2019 she took an online willow weaving course with Hanna Van Aelst, an artist in Ireland, and has been exploring on her own with local materials in different styles of weaving.  Joining Karin is Teya, who has a background in Education and Child and Youth Care and has more recently begun the journey of deepening her connection with the land through the art of basket weaving. This class is suitable for beginners as well as people who have done some weaving and the project can be adjusted to best suit skill and ability levels. We invite you to join with open minds and open hearts to reconnect with the joys of weaving.
